Over the past three decades, identity-based groups and practices have been seen as confirming and expanding the views of disenfranchised populations, especially in regard to voting rights, civil rights and equality. More recently, some theorists have suggested that identity politics has been exhausted, has become so ambiguous as to be meaningless, or has undermined the radical potential of the social process of becoming. Yet, the concept of identity continues to anchor both academic and activist resistance to domination, marginalization, sexism, racism, colonialism, and oppression. How does the construction of emancipatory knowledge about bodies take place, particularly in this current geopolitical landscape? What do such practices look like? What are the moral and ethical imperatives of artists, arts scholars and critics for fostering solidarities against injustice? How do we—or should we—advocate for multiplicity and seek avenues for destabilization and radical politicization?
